When it comes to contouring your body and tackling those stubborn pockets of fat that refuse to budge despite diet and exercise, the choice between Aqualyx and CoolSculpting can be pivotal.
I understand that everyone’s journey is unique, and selecting the right treatment for you requires knowledge, transparency, and careful consideration. So, I will explore the differences, benefits, and factors to consider when choosing between these two leading fat-reduction options.
Body Sculpting Is Not Weight-loss
Firstly it is important to understand that body sculpting treatments are not treatments for weight loss. To undergo a body sculpting treatment you should be near you ideal weight and seeking to reduce stubborn pockets of fat that have proved to be diet and exercise resistant.
These treatments should not be confused with weight-loss injections such as Wegovy, Mounjaro and Saxenda, which should also only be done under medical supervision.
What is Aqualyx®?
Aqualyx is an injectable treatment designed to dissolve fat deposits. Aqualyx works by disrupting the fat cell membrane, causing the fat cells to break down and be naturally metabolised by the body over several weeks.
Ideal for:
- Small, localised areas of fat, such as under the chin (submental fat), bra bulges, or arms.
- Patients looking for a gradual and subtle fat reduction.
How it works:
- The fat-dissolving solution is injected directly into the fatty tissue.
- Fat cells are broken down and then eliminated via the lymphatic system.
- Multiple sessions (usually 2–4) are recommended for optimal results.
Treatment time: 30–60 minutes, depending on the area.
Downtime: None, but mild swelling, redness, or bruising may occur.
Results timeline: Visible results appear after 6 weeks and continue to improve with subsequent sessions.
What is CoolSculpting®?
CoolSculpting, or cryolipolysis, is a fat-freezing treatment that uses controlled cooling to target and destroy fat cells. Again the fat cells break down and are naturally metabolised by the body over several weeks.
Ideal for:
- Larger areas of fat, such as the tummy, love handles, thighs.
- Patients seeking a noticeable fat reduction (about 20-25%) in a single session. But most patients have a repeat treatment to achieve 30-40% reduction.
How it works:
- A specialised applicator is placed on the treatment area to freeze fat cells to a temperature that causes fat cell death (apoptosis).
- Fat cells are broken down and then eliminated via the lymphatic system.
- Typically, 1–2 sessions per area are sufficient.
Treatment time: Each session lasts about 60–180 minutes depending on the area.
Downtime: None, though temporary redness, numbness, or tenderness may occur.
Results timeline: Initial results start to appear at 4 weeks, with full results evident after 8–12 weeks.
Comparing the Benefits of Aqualyx® and CoolSculpting®
Treatment Customisation
- Aqualyx: Best for precise fat reduction in small, localised areas. It offers a highly targeted approach and can be adjusted to treat even the most delicate regions, such as the jawline.
- CoolSculpting: Suitable for contouring larger areas and achieving more comprehensive body reshaping. Its range of applicators allows for versatile treatment of various body parts.
Non-Surgical and Minimally Invasive
Both treatments avoid the risks and recovery time associated with surgical fat-reduction procedures like liposuction.
- Aqualyx: Minimally invasive, involving injections rather than devices.
- CoolSculpting: Completely non-invasive, relying on external cooling technology.
Long-Lasting Results
Once fat cells are eliminated, they do not regenerate in the treated area. However, maintaining results requires a healthy lifestyle to prevent fat accumulation elsewhere.
- Aqualyx: Results are gradual, providing a subtle transformation over time.
- CoolSculpting: Offers quicker and often more dramatic changes, particularly for larger areas.
Safety and Comfort
Both treatments are safe with a proven track record, with millions of procedures performed worldwide.
- Aqualyx: Patients typically experience mild discomfort during injections, followed by swelling or tenderness which resolves within a week.
- CoolSculpting: The cooling process may cause temporary numbness or tingling which is tolerable but may last several weeks.
Key Considerations
Your Goals
If your goal is to target a small, specific area with precision, Aqualyx may be the better choice. If you’re looking to contour larger areas and prefer fewer sessions, CoolSculpting could be more suitable.
Time Commitment
Aqualyx requires multiple sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart, making it ideal if you prefer gradual results. CoolSculpting often delivers noticeable improvements after just one session, appealing to those seeking few appointments.
Budget
Aqualyx is typically more cost-effective for small areas. CoolSculpting is typically more cost-effective for larger areas.
Medical Suitability
Aqualyx is not recommended for individuals with liver or kidney conditions or for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. CoolSculpting is unsuitable for patients with cryoglobulinaemia or cold sensitivity disorders.
