I’m not usually one to be drawn in by sensationalist click-bait headlines, but I have to admit that when I read the title “How a £450 salmon sperm injection - a beauty ingredient used by Jennifer Aniston - banished my eyebags” in a tabloid paper, I had to have a read.
The ingredient they were referring to was in fact polynucleotides – something I have done extensive research into, having travelled to South Korea to meet with leading aesthetics experts and cosmeceutical manufacturers to discuss. Read on as I explain all about the treatment they’re hailing as the new celebrity must-have in the fight against ageing.
Let’s talk about that ingredient
First and foremost, I understand that the concept of using salmon sperm is bound to raise a few eyebrows! But as an ingredient, it’s really not as unusual as it sounds. The ingredient we use at the DRVICTORIA™ Clinic is actually a by-product of the food industry, it is derived from farmed salmon and is filtered, purified and sterilised.
You might also be surprised to discover that salmon or trout sperm contain nucleotide chains, the building blocks of DNA and RNA, which are compatible with humans. And crucially, these can be made to create a safe polynucleotide serums to help regenerate human cells. (Ref 1)
What are polynucleotides?
Polynucleotides have been shown to rejuvenate the skin at a cellular level. They do so by stimulating the production of two important proteins: collagen and elastin. These proteins are like the scaffolding that keeps our skin looking firm and youthful. By using polynucleotides to boost your collagen and elastin production you can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving you fresher and more radiant skin.
Polynucleotides are a great option for those with obviously ageing skin who want to regenerate skin cells at a deeper level and experience long-lasting results. Alternatively, Profhilo treatments are also a good solution for younger individuals who want to get ahead of the ageing process or who are showing the very early signs of ageing.
How we harness the power of polynucleotides
Despite already been a well-established treatment ingredient in places such as South Korea (which is widely regarded as being home to the most advanced developments in the aesthetics world), polynucleotides are still a relatively new concept to many people here in the west. And that’s why I am thrilled that my clinic is one of the leaders in offering this treatment in Scotland.
We deliver the power of polynucleotides through an effective serum, suitable for skin of any colour, typically aged 30-45, who are starting to notice fine lines around their eyes, upper lip and forehead.
We combine the application of the polynucleotide serum with microneedling, which involves creating micro-channels through your skin's stratum corneum, or outer layer of your skin, using ultra-fine, sterile needles. This allows the polynucleotides to penetrate deeper into your epidermis and down to your dermis where they can generate an even more powerful result. In addition, the micro-channels also stimulate your skin's natural healing response to help collagen and elastin production leading to healthier, tighter, younger looking skin.
A firm favourite of celebrities
Polynucleotide treatments are proving to be a firm favourite of celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston who openly swears by their anti-ageing results. I’m not one for Hollywood hype, but when it comes to polynucleotides, there is growing evidence (Ref 2) to support just how transformative they can be in the fight against skin ageing.
You’re in safe hands
As with any treatment, you might have some reservations when contemplating trying it for the first time. But at my clinic your safety and peace of mind is always my top priority. Our team is highly qualified and highly experienced, plus we’re fully certified, regulated and assessed by leading organisations such as Healthcare Improvement Scotland and Save Face. The polynucleotide products we use are fully tested through strict control measures to ensure they are safe.
